I actually managed to get up early to attend a church I’d been considering for awhile. It’s disappointing that it’s been so long since I’ve been a regular attender at any church, but at least I managed a step today.
One problem I have in settling on a church is that I usually don’t like sermons. Bits and pieces of it, certainly, and once in awhile the entire thing, but usually not. I suspect it’s because the speaker has to hammer the point home in a few different ways, to make sure everyone gets it, but I get kinda bored once I understand. The uncomfortable seating doesn’t help.
Generally, I find Sunday school more interesting; the classes are split by age group, so the topics can be chosen accordingly. Even still, however, there are times when the discussion doesn’t seem very animated or critical, just the “usual” answers. I’m guilty here, though, since I don’t always speak up.
One thought that strikes me is perhaps I’m not interested in that form of learning anymore: fed most of the time and occasionally prompted with questions. I have some religious-oriented books on my list, and the few I have read were interesting. It’s not a substitute for the other aspects of church, but perhaps selected literature would satisfy the intellectual aspect.
