Gmail handles winmail.dat files

A friend of mine has frequent problems with the winmail.dat problem. Many non-technical users don’t know that Outlook doesn’t always play nice with other mail clients, resulting in other mail readers (e.g. webmail) showing an email with an odd winmail.dat file attachment in place of the desired content.

While there are several utilities and websites to extract the content from the winmail.dat, I found out that Gmail now converts the winmail.dat file automatically. My friend sent me the problem attachment, and oddly, it showed up correctly as a Word document. Kudos to Google for doing this; I *think* it’s a pretty recent feature, as I remember wondering why gmail didn’t do that. Thankfully, my idle wonderings have been answered. :)
