I’ve always wondered about people who rose before sunrise of their own volition. How they do it, why they do it, are they crazy? And I’d always been chided by good ‘ol mom about the disadvantages at getting up at noon or later.
I had always considered myself a “night owl”, and to some degree preferred it that way. As soon as people start disappearing, leaving the office or dropping offline, it seems so much easier to concentrate. My most productive hours (typically computer-related) have always seemed to be the wee hours between midnight and two.
With meetings nowadays, I can’t just roll into the office when I want to, and it’s bothersome to spend the first half of the day in a kind of daze. Caffeine is only a short term solution. So after reading Steve Pavlina’s blog, on how to becom an early riser, I decided to give it a try. A helpful motivating factor is the common observation that early risers get more done and are generally more “successful”.
So we’ll see how it goes. Today’s the first day, and despite going to bed a few hours ago *and* having a couple drinks to do so, I feel pretty good. Not sleepy at all, and I’m actually having breakfast (as opposed to lunch). We’ll see if I can keep it up, though, and if I actually reap any benefits from it. My initial impression: being up early with nobody around feels similar to being up late with nobody around, but more wakeful.
