I finally bought a tv. I sat on the fence for a few days, deciding between an economical 27″ CRT (good model), and a pricier, more compact projector. I figured it wasn’t really worth the money (not being an HD person) to get an LCD, plasma, rear-projection, etc. tv – after a certain number of inches, it costs more than the projector, and judging from the screenshots, a projector can render a DVD appropriately.
I could say that it was to save space. I could say it was because it has better value per square inch of viewable “screen”. I could say that I’m trying to learn to live light and not hoard a lot of bulky junk. However, I confess: it’s a toy. A first-kid-on-the-block-to-have-one toy, as I’ve never seen anyone else’s home theatre with a projector. Most importantly, considering the other things I have around, it pressed just the right buttons of curiosity, novelty, and ridiculousness.
With all my anticipation, I hope it turns out well. I’ll be very upset if all those glowing reviews turn out to be wrong (unlikely in my experience). Finding out that UPS is taking it through customs has dampened my enthusiasm somewhat . UPS’s ‘handling” fee to go through customs is quite outrageous.
If you’re half as interested as I am in the projector, here’s a detailed review of the Optoma DV10, replete with pictures of the projector and how well it shows some movies. Now, to pick the first movie I’m going to watch…
