Notre Dame

Subsisting off of coffee and cream, I made my way to Ile de la Cite, snapping pictures as the sky warmed with yellows and reds.

Regrettably, I did not find any creperies on the way, but Notre Dame was certainly enough to divert my attention from my stomach.

There are many pictures of Notre Dame; I dobut mine can do much better. It is impressive though. After browsing and infinitely fiddling with my camera and tripod, I wrote in the book of “Intentions to God” they have here, said a prayer, and am now about to be on my way.

Architecture in Paris is stunning. I guess a history spanning two millennia, along with an extensive imperialistic period, goes a long way.

French coffee

I don’t think I adequately described the coffee in my last post with “the coffee is quite good.”. It’s very good. As I pay more attention to it (and perhaps as my morning tastebuds adapt to the shock of coffee?), there is the familiar initial coffee taste, but none of the bitter aftertaste or “bite” I recall from a typical Starbucks latte. This coffee is “smooth”, for lack of a better term; the cream probably is helping, but I think it’s intrinsic to the coffee as well.

Perhaps I’ll try Starbucks here as well, to compare to North American Starbucks and to compare to the cafe coffee. It seems wrong to go to that overpriced institution while in Paris (price and taste!), though!

Paris in the early morning

6am, time to rise and glow dimly. Paris is quite nice in the early morning. The streets in this district are well lit and pretty in the dark, and there are people walking their dogs or opening the stores. The temperature is very mild, perhaps 10C or so?

I’m here at a cafe down from my hotel, reeling from sticker shock. I still need to get used to paying 5 euros for a coffee (cappuccino?) with cream (at least the 20% tax is included!). The coffee is quite good. A galette after this seems in order.

I had notions of going to the Seine to capture the river as the sun rose. Too bad I forgot it’s winter, and the sun probably does not rise for another hour! I’ll be “savoring” this coffee for awhile!
