Freespace 2 – free, runs on Linux

I never played Freespace 2, but I played a very similar game, Wing Commander. A friend was recently re-hooked on the former after discovering it was now freely available (i.e. without pirating), and recommended I try it.

The game is fun, although my gameplay skills are poor. It’s also fascinating in a more mundane way: how a commercial game was released as open source, and extended to have better graphics and Linux support.

Now that I don’t play games as often, the prospects of having Windows around is less and less appealing, even as a reboot. Running it on Linux was definitely a motivating factor to play this game; the installation was pretty smooth too (Java-based auto-downloading installer).

So… anyone want to play multiplayer Freespace 2? :)
